CEU Information

Maintaining Continuing Education Units (CEUs) is essential for keeping your medical billing and coding certifications active. Here’s what you need to know:

AAPC (CPC, CPB, etc.)

  • Requires 36 CEUs every two years for one credential.

  • If you hold multiple certifications, you’ll need additional CEUs (e.g., 48 for two, 60 for three).

  • Pro Tip: AAPC members get free CEUs from webinars and conferences.

If you are newly certified, CEUs are likely to be pro-rated to match your existing renewal month for your first submission.

To learn more about AAPC CEUs and how many you are required to obtain based on your certifications can be found here:

AHIMA (CCA, CCS, CCS-P, etc.)

  • CCA: 20 CEUs every 2 years

  • CCS & CCS-P: 30 CEUs every 2 years

  • RHIT & RHIA: 30 CEUs every 2 years

  • Bonus: 80% of CEUs must be coding/healthcare-related; 20% can be broader professional development.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on AHIMA's Continuing Education Units (CEU) requirements, please refer to the official AHIMA resources:

Tips to Stay on Track:

Track Your CEUs: Use AAPC’s/AHIMA’s online portal to log credits.
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute: Spread CEUs out over two years to avoid a rush.
Look for Free CEUs: AAPC offers free CEUs for members, and CMS often has free webinars.
Verify Accepted CEUs: Make sure courses are pre-approved by AAPC/AHIMA.
